Duplicide is a free windows program for finding, deleting duplicate files and empty folders. Duplicide employs CRC32 and MD5 algorithms to detect duplicate files. In addition, it gives you the option to compare two files byte-by-byte. It is distributed under Creative Commons Attribution-NoDerivs 3.0 Unported License for both non-profit and commercial use.
How does Duplicide work?
First thing Duplicide does is, it looks for files with the same size within the folders you have specified. Once it is done building these set of files, it gets the CRC32 or MD5 values (sort of a “finger” print for each file) depending on which option you chose. It then matches these values to decide whether these files are possibly identical. We say possibly because there is a slim chance that the ‘fingerprints’ we obtained from two non-identical files could match. What are the chances of a false positive (a match)? 1 in 2^32 (4,294,967,296) for CRC32 and even slimmer for MD5 2^128. The only way to be 100% sure is to perform a byte-by-byte comparison of the two files. A task which you can accomplish by selecting two files with matching fingerprints from the list and click on the Compare button. Please keep in mind that although the MD5 method is more secure than the CRC32, the former method is slower than the latter one.
Is this application free of malware, spyware, adware, ….ware??
